Jonathan is a member of our chemistry & materials team with particular expertise in the agricultural, biotechnology, industrial chemistry, nanotech and pharmaceutical sectors.

His technical experience includes:

  • small molecule therapeutics
  • modified natural products, particularly modified peptides for use in therapy
  • materials chemistry
  • organic polymers, e.g. for ophthalmic and automotive applications
  • supramolecular systems
  • microfluidic chemistry
  • biocatalysts and metal complex catalysts
  • electrochemical applications
  • agricultural chemicals

Jonathan has worked extensively with university clients, research institutes, university spin outs and their financial backers, and he is frequently asked to provide patentability and freedom to operate opinions for therapeutic products. Jonathan is currently working with a number of new start-up firms in the area of therapeutic delivery.

Jonathan is a frequent visitor to Canada and Japan, and has spent considerable time in the former on secondment to Canada’s largest intellectual property law firm.

Jonathan is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and is active as an ambassador for the RSC in Cambridge, most recently as a speaker at the Cambridge Science Festival.

Jonathan has a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Cambridge and a Masters degree in chemistry from the University of Edinburgh.

Jonathan joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2004, qualifying as both a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2008. He joined the partnership in 2012.
