Joseph (Joe) handles patent work in our chemistry & materials team with a focus on the pharmaceutical, Medtech, industrial chemistry, consumer product and food & beverage industries.

His technical expertise includes:

  • small molecule pharmaceuticals
  • medical devices including implantable devices
  • polymers, especially synthetic fibres and textiles, resin and fibre reinforced composites and plasma-treated polymers
  • light emitting materials
  • laundry detergents
  • catalyst recycling
  • transition metal chemistry
  • neutraceuticals
  • industrial edible oil production

He deals mainly with patent drafting, prosecution, oppositions and appeals before the EPO and various opinion work.

His clients include SMEs, Universities, research foundations and large domestic and overseas companies.

Joe has a degree and PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Durham. His PhD project focussed on the selective recovery of platinum group metal catalysts from industrial mixed-metal solutions. He is an active member of the Royal Society of Chemistry Law Group Committee.

Joe joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2007 after working in the technology transfer offices of the University of Oxford and the Medical Research Council. He qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2010 and a European Patent Attorney in 2011. He joined the partnership in 2015.

Joe was awarded a Higher Courts Litigation Certificate in 2017 allowing him to conduct intellectual property litigation in all relevant courts, including the Patents Court (High Court), the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court and on appeal from the Patents Court or the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court.
