Sam is a member of the chemical & materials patent team and works mainly in the pharmaceutical, industrial chemistry, oil & gas and nanotech sectors. Sam is also a member of our Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) team working to supplement the duration of protection offered by the patent system for medicinal and plant protection products requiring regulatory approval.

He has experience of drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the UK and at the European Patent Office and coordinating patent prosecution and strategy worldwide. He also represents clients in EPO hearings both during examination of patent applications and in opposition and appeal proceedings.
He works for a range of clients including small local companies, UK universities and university spin-outs through to large multinational companies. Sam worked on a secondment with a US patent attorney firm and remains a regular visitor to the USA both for conferences and to visit clients.
Sam has a Masters Degree and PhD in Chemistry from the University of Oxford. His Masters project concentrated on growth of inorganic crystals using single-walled carbon nanotubes as growth guides. His PhD research continued this work into other areas of carbon nanotube technology including the improvement of methods of synthesis of single-wall carbon nanotubes, and chemical modification the external surfaces of nanotubes with organic functional groups.
Sam joined Mewburn Ellis in 2002, qualifying as a European Patent Attorney in 2006 and a UK Chartered Patent Attorney in 2007. He joined the partnership in 2010.
