Our two-week course provides an in-depth study of the legal and practical aspects of working with the EPC and EPO and is aimed at practitioners from Japan and other Asian countries, from either private practice or industrial IP departments.  It includes optional additional seminars on other aspects of intellectual property.

The course takes place in Manchester (UK) week 1 and London (UK) week 2.

Outline of the Course

The course features:

  • Review of the law, case law and procedure for all the key topics: patentable inventions; novelty; priority; inventive step; amendments; filing applications; formalities; examination; grant; hearings; oppositions; and appeals.
  • Emphasis on practical advice, exercises and examples.
  • Claim drafting exercise.
  • Office action, opposition and litigation case studies.
  • Workshops for different subject areas: mechanical/ electrical; computers/business methods; pharmaceutical chemistry; non-pharmaceutical chemistry; biotechnology.
  • Introduction to and status of the new unitary patent system.
  • Implications of Brexit for European IP law and practice.
  • Optional lunchtime seminars on designs, trade marks and supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) for pharmaceuticals

EPO visit

After the course, there is an optional visit to the EPO in Munich on Monday 18 June 2019.  This will include the opportunity to observe an oral hearing (subject to availability), and a discussion with an EPO examiner.  We do not make any additional charge for the trip.

Level of the course

The course assumes that the delegates already have a basic knowledge of patent law and practice.


All lectures and course materials are in English.  The lecture notes will be provided in electronic form only, so delegates are expected to bring a laptop for use during the lectures.


The course fee for 2018 will be £3450  per person (including tax).  The cost per person includes all lectures and optional seminars; course materials; the entertainments and UK travel listed on the schedule.  This fee does not include accommodation and living expenses in the UK, nor travel to Munich and accommodation there for the optional EPO trip.  However, we will gladly arrange accommodation on your behalf.

Should it be necessary to cancel your place on the course we must receive notification no later than 6 weeks prior to first day of the course.  If we are unable to find a replacement, we will charge 75% of the course fee plus any non-refundable hotel and travel expenses we have incurred on your behalf.
