Big Ideas Day: From Patent to Profit Panel – 3 Key Themes
Partner Fran Salisbury took part in an IP Attorney panel at the ‘Big Ideas Day’ event which took place at the Manchester Central Library on 21 March 2018. This event was hosted by The Business and IP Centre, Manchester and consisted of a free patent clinic where the panel took questions and offered tips to help attendees navigate the sometimes complicated areas of IP protection.
Key themes from the panel included:
If you own a business it is almost certain you will own some intellectual property (IP). IP is the great ideas, inventions and innovations that differentiate your business and give you an advantage over your competitors. The panel discussed all different aspects of IP, including copyright, designs, patents and trade marks and gave the audience tips on how best to use their IP as a commercial asset.
A strong brand can be a powerful tool for marketing and promoting products or services. Consumers make choices based on brands on a daily basis – having a brand strategy that differentiates your business from competitors can be a key factor in growing your business and creating a loyal customer base.
A key theme of the Q&A was the problem of counterfeit products and internet marketplace websites. This type of IP infringement is becoming more problematic with the rising popularity of marketplace websites, where consumers are often unaware that they are buying counterfeit goods. The panel discussed the impact of counterfeit goods, actions that can be taken against the counterfeiters, and strategies for building your business despite the continuous threat of copying.
The event also presented a great opportunity to meet some local Manchester entrepreneurs.
