Composites &

Coatings

Composite materials are finding use at an ever-increasing scale in an ever-increasing range of applications, from wind turbine blades, to building materials and diverse forms of packaging,  Composites have allowed us to develop higher strength construction materials and packaging materials with improved barrier properties, as well as lighter planes and simpler solar cells.

We are inspired by the possibilities created by the shift to composite materials. We are not passive by-standers - we take an active interest in the field, seeking to contribute to the conversation through writing blogs and articles in trade and IP journals and attending events. Our output ranges from broad pieces on the use of composites in automotive applications, to more tailored pieces around composites incorporating natural fibres, and issues surrounding recyclability of composites.

We are specialists in helping our clients to get IP protection for new composites, methods of producing these materials and applications. We have particular expertise in technologies relating to prepregs, fibre reinforced resins, epoxy resins and liquid crystal display materials.

We also understand that many companies are increasingly environmentally conscious and are looking for ways to recycle composite materials to avoid adding to the plastic pollution problem.

Coatings are used to enhance the properties of a wide range of different materials, from isocyanate based paints which give cars durable finishes that are chemical resistant, flexible and impervious to breakdown from the sun’s rays to non-stick coatings on pans. Coatings also find utility in more high-tech applications including antibacterial coatings in hospitals to protective coatings on LED light bulbs.

We have extensive experience in assisting clients with obtaining IP rights in this area. We are proud to work with some of the largest UK manufacturers of coating compositions. Our team have strong expertise in emulsions, adhesive compositions, thickeners, primers, water resistant compositions and heat stable compositions.

We understand the complexities associated with producing new coatings ranging from the development of new formulations to manufacture and application and can assist you with your IP needs every step along the way of your development process.

Patents are both a driver and a barometer of innovation

Our report examines the role of patents in making innovative ‘green’ technologies into a reality as well as how the patent landscape can be used to identify opportunities for partnering, collaboration and investment.

We share our enthusiasm and admiration for commercially-focused innovation across a diverse range of technologies, from repurposing carbon dioxide to make protein-rich foods, to the multi-faceted approach to a circular plastics economy. We also discuss the tantalising prospect of AI-mediated renewable energy supply, and the harnessing of battery tech from the EV boom to drive energy efficiency in consumer devices. This report reflects our passion for technology solutions that tackle our shared global challenge.
