About Us

Mewburn Ellis is the forward-looking IP firm

We work with organisations building the brands and technologies that will define tomorrow. Whatever you do, wherever you’re based, and whatever your size, we can help you navigate your business journey, using Intellectual Property to imagine, plan, nurture and protect your innovations and deliver them to market.

As one of Europe’s top specialist Intellectual Property firms we believe in a personal approach to business. Our focus is on providing strategic advice to maximise the potential of your IP as an asset and so increase the value of your business.  We can be counted on to be one step ahead, looking at how you can best exploit your IP portfolio both now and in the future. We’re known for providing clear, concise and to the point IP advice. We won’t crush new ideas at early stages, but from the outset we’ll be clear on what will and won’t work from an IP perspective.

Mewburn Ellis continues to grow and we are now over 350 strong. Currently the firm has over 50 partners and over 110 qualified patent and trade mark attorneys, solicitors and IP litigators spread across five offices in Europe, as well as an enthusiastic and highly motivated business services team.

Our experts work at all stages of the IP life cycle and advise about patent, trade mark and registered designs, as well as any IP-related disputes and legal and commercial requirements. Operating as one team it’s our client-focused working practices and commitment to building long-term relationships that make us the IP firm of choice for so many businesses and individuals.

Forward Looking for Over 150 Years

John Clayton Mewburn was a talented and enthusiastic young patent agent when he founded his intellectual property office in London in 1867. Just 27 years old, he knew an opportunity when he saw one.  The Industrial Revolution was still in full swing, with technological and scientific innovation at its height. So there were not only more people looking to protect their inventions and ideas, it was also easier and cheaper for them to do so than ever before.  In the 1890's he joined forces with George Beloe Ellis – a solicitor who shared his passion for new inventions and industrial property. Together the two men set about fulfilling their desire to protect the technologies they loved.

Sustainable Communities

We recognise that we have a responsibility to ensure our business has a positive impact on the people, communities and environment around us.

Sustainabilty is important to us. The success of our business relies upon our ability to attract, train and retain the best people. We support diversity throughout our business and make every effort to create and maintain an inclusive culture.  We recognise our responsibilities in the community and encourage our people to engage in activities that better wider society, and build trust in our local communities.  As a forward-looking firm, we understand the importance of minimising our environmental impact and

As part of our commitment to the wider community we give 1% of our profits to charitable causes through the Mewburn Ellis Forward Foundation. We also give every person in the firm a community day to enable them to take time to support a cause that's important to them. This amounts to over 260 days of time donated a year to good causes and we are very proud of this.
