Extended

Reality

Extended reality (XR) is the universal term used when referring to immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). By 2022, the XR market is expected to reach USD 209 billion having grown significantly in the past decade.

The field of XR encompasses not only consumer applications such as video games, education, etc. (although these are, of course, the most popular) but also the use of XR in life-saving environments such as Search and Rescue and surgical settings. The technology underpinning this provides tremendous opportunities, as well as significant challenges not least data security & encryption.

It also represents an interesting intersection of patent law, relating to the exclusion of computer programs and the presentation of information, as well as the interplay between these and hardware elements. Fortunately, our attorneys at Mewburn Ellis have a deep understanding of the law paired with excellent technical abilities across the multi-disciplinary team. Software Inventions: UKIPO and EPO approaches to patent eligibility

In this report we take a close look at whether the European Patent Office (“EPO”) and the UK Intellectual Property Office (“UKIPO”) handle software inventions differently. We also reveal some strategic insights that we think will be of benefit to companies seeking patent protection for software inventions in the UK and Europe.
