Alex is a UK & European patent attorney specialising in chemistry and materials. His work includes drafting and prosecuting of patent applications, as well as advising on freedom-to-operate and validity projects, and helping to shape clients’ IP strategies.

Alex has a proven track record in opposition & appeals proceedings. His meticulous approach, keen attention to detail and enthusiasm make him an invaluable asset on any team. His appreciation of commercial contexts and unwavering commitment to positive outcomes have resulted in numerous successful cases.

Alex works with a mix of different clients, including large industrial chemistry firms based in the UK and North America, multinational consumer goods companies, local universities & innovators, and international attorneys in a number of major jurisdictions.

Alex has a particular interest in battery and energy storage technologies. He has actively contributed to many Mewburn Ellis blog articles on this topic.   

EPO Opposition Highlights

Alex has experience in opposing and defending patents of high commercial importance across a variety of chemistry fields – including 3D printing resins, plastic bottle closures, and fabric conditioner capsules.

Notable cases include:

  • Offensive oppositions – Revocation of EP2922818 at the EPO’s Opposition Division, relating to linkers for antibody-drug conjugates.
  • Defensive oppositions – Maintenance of EP2931763 in granted form, relating to ethylene copolymers and olefin polymerisation processes.

Qualifications and Technical Background

Alex has a Master’s degree in Chemistry and a DPhil in Organic Chemistry from the University of Oxford. 

He has particular experience and knowledge in areas including:

  • Energy storage and battery materials
  • Green industrial chemistry processes
  • Polymer compositions
  • 3D printing resins
  • Detergent compositions and packaging
  • Pharmaceuticals such as antibody-drug conjugates

Professional Career

Alex joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2016 and passed the Queen Mary Certificate in Intellectual Property Law with Distinction in 2018. Alex qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2021. He is also authorised to represent clients at the UPC.

Alex is a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), and The Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (epi).
