Sophie is a UK patent attorney specialising in the chemistry and materials science fields.  Experienced in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, as well as conducting thorough freedom-to-operate and validity analyses, she is committed to providing practical and strategic advice tailored to each client’s specific needs.  Sophie is passionate about protecting innovative ideas and helping clients to navigate the complex patent landscape.  Her meticulous and organised approach makes her a valuable asset to any project she works on. 

Sophie works with a diverse range of clients, from local universities and innovators to large industrial chemistry firms and international attorneys in major jurisdictions like Japan.

With a keen interest in emerging technologies, particularly in the fields of green chemistry and sustainable materials, Sophie is excited to contribute to the development of ground-breaking solutions that address global challenges.

Qualifications and Technical Background

Sophie holds a MSci degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in Chemistry, from the University of Cambridge.  Her final year project involved the synthesis and characterisation of coated nanoparticles for incorporation within a metal organic framework for biomedical applications.

She has particular experience and knowledge in areas including:

  • Plant Based Foods particularly sweeteners
  • Energy storage and battery materials
  • Polymer compositions
  • Pharmaceuticals such as antibody-drug conjugates

Professional Career

Sophie joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2021 and passed the Bournemouth University Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law with Distinction in 2023.  Sophie qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2024. 

Sophie is involved in organising internal tutorials for her cohort for the UK and European Qualifying Exams, and she takes an interest in supporting the learning and development of the firm’s trainee attorneys during the qualification/training process. 

Sophie also keeps up-to-date with the most recent decisions from the EPO and shares insights with the wider team through firmwide lunchtime learning seminars.

Published Articles

Reflecting her interest of sustainable chemistry solutions, Sophie has written several articles on the topic of energy storage and composites which have been published on the firm’s website.
