Victoria is a UK & European patent attorney specialising in the chemistry and pharmaceutical fields. She works at all stages of the patent lifecycle including invention capture, drafting, prosecution, and opposition proceedings as well as advising on freedom-to-operate and validity projects, and helping to shape clients’ IP strategies. 

Victoria has multiple direct clients and extensive experience of managing very large and high value global patent portfolios for large multinational pharmaceutical companies. As well as her vast knowledge of European case law in relation to pharmaceutical inventions, Victoria has an in-depth knowledge of the patent systems and requirements in many key jurisdictions including Europe, the US, China, Japan, Korea, India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and other South American countries. Victoria also advises several SMEs and start-up companies on their patent strategy and has drafted and prosecuted several patent applications which are integral to their business.  

Qualifications and Technical Background

Victoria has a Master’s degree in chemistry and patent law from Manchester University, undertaking a research project investigating organometallic diquat salts for non-linear optics in her final year.

Victoria specialises in pharmaceutical patents and her areas of expertise include small molecule drug candidates, antibody-drug conjugates, PROTACs, pharmaceutical formulations, dosage regimes, drug combinations, chemical processes and methods of synthesis, polymorphic forms and patient populations amongst many other chemistry related inventions. 

Victoria's wide-ranging experience with many different pharmaceutical inventions allows her to advise her clients on invention capture and IP strategy. 

Professional Career

Victoria began her career as a patent attorney in-house within a global pharmaceutical company, where she gained an in-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and pharmaceutical inventions. This experience included extensive freedom to operate analysis, oppositions at the EPO, and advising different areas of the business on various activities such as launching products and changes to manufacturing processes.

Victoria joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2018, qualifying as a European Patent Attorney in 2018 and a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2019.

Victoria is passionate about diversity and inclusion and is a proud member of our I&D collaboration group, the WoMEn Network collaboration group, the IP Inclusive women in IP events focus group and the CIPA diversity and inclusion committee.  As part of the I&D collaboration group Victoria has an active role in building and delivering the firm’s inclusion and diversity initiatives and to make sure equality and diversity are celebrated.  The WoMEn of Mewburn Ellis network provides a valuable space for women and allies to support and champion each other regardless of their role within the company.
