Launched in 2000, the UN Global Compact is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world, with more than 15,000 companies and 3,800 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and more than 69 Local Networks. The UN Global Compact is a call to companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles, and to take action in support of UN goals and issues embodied in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs focus on areas where businesses have a large effect on outcomes: human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Currently our environmental work delivers against three of the seventeen SDG goals, our I&D work delivers against three and our community work delivers against ten, you can read more about this in our Sustainable Communities Special Report.

This announcement follows our EcoVadis award in September for achievements in sustainability. EcoVadis, the world’s largest provider of business sustainability ratings, awarded the firm a prestigious silver medal, putting it in the 83rd percentile of all businesses assessed. We have also had their Science Based Targets approved by the SBTi and submitted to CDP, making them one of the most advanced IP firms in the world in the sustainability space.

Our track record on sustainability is a testament to our ambition to do the right thing and lead the way in the field. Combining a commitment of resources to acquire depth of knowledge with engagement at all levels, has allowed us to rapidly mature our approach.  As part of the commitment to the UN Global Compact, we will (continue to) place sustainability at the heart of the business informing the decision we make and driving forward our ambitious agenda.

Eleanor Maciver, Partner and Sustainability Champion says:

“In line with our demonstrated commitment to these principles, Mewburn Ellis is proud to join the UN Global Compact initiative.
The UN Global Compact provides businesses all over the world with guidance, and a community, as they move towards more robust sustainability programmes. With stakeholders increasingly expecting businesses to play a key role in creating a more sustainable and equitable world, this initiative is more important now than ever before. We will be working within the framework provided by the UN as we continue to spearhead responsible business practices in the IP sector and beyond.”
