New appointments signal rapid growth for Mewburn Ellis in Munich

We have continued to demonstrate impressive growth with a series of new hires in our Munich office bringing the total headcount to 15. This rate of expansion is set to continue as part of our next phase of growth, and follows the hire of partner Dr Thomas Wolter, who joined the Munich office earlier this year. With further growth plans pending, we have also expanded our premises to accommodate the new and future hires.

Swetlana Frese recently joined the firm as an attorney-at-law. She has specific experience assisting national and international clients to strategically develop their trade mark portfolios worldwide. Swetlana is also experienced in dealing with prosecution and contentious matters before the GPTO and EUIPO, and has assisted in lawsuits before German courts as well as in trade mark proceedings before the Federal Patent Court, the General Court and the European Court of Justice.

Kathrin-Susann Jäck has joined the firm as a highly skilled Paralegal with a decade of experience assisting clients with their patent, trade mark and design applications, and now works alongside the trade mark team to offer a high quality and stable service for clients looking for EUIPO and DPMA services.

Sandra Kern will also be joining the firm as a Paralegal starting 4th January 2020, and has a wealth of experience dealing with trade mark, patent and design matters, having worked as a Paralegal for almost 20 years at a number of different intellectual property firms across Munich.

Our Munich office, which opened in 2017, offers a full range of patent, trade mark and design services, including drafting, prosecution, oppositions, litigation, IP strategy consulting and portfolio management. With the rising cost of filing and prosecuting applications at the EPO, many international applicants are favouring the national route forward instead, in particular looking to file UK and German patent applications instead of EP applications – a service which the firm is unmatched at providing. The firm’s Munich office will continue to offer clients full rights of representation for all proceedings before the EUIPO post-Brexit for trade marks and design rights.

Tanis Keirstead, partner and head of the Munich office at Mewburn Ellis, commented:

“Kathrin-Susann, Swetlana and Sandra are very welcome additions to the team and we are delighted to have them join during such an exciting period of expansion. These strategic hires are our latest moves forming part of our wider ambitious growth plans which will further cement our position as one of Europe’s leading IP firms.

“We have worked successfully to grow our Munich office, recognising the value that this brings to our service offering by enhancing our ability to serve EU-based and international clients.”
