We are delighted to release our latest report Quantum and the law. View the report here.
Led by Andrew Fearnside our report examines the enormous potential of quantum technologies to impact a variety of different fields.
The quantum technology industry is experiencing a period of rapid growth and transformation, as ground-breaking advancements in quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing are reshaping the technological landscape.
2024 saw a significant amount of investment globally from both the public and private sectors, accelerating the process and signalling a quantum ‘arms race’. Patents in the quantum technology industry have grown rapidly in recent years, reflecting the increasing commercial interest and technological advancements.
Major strides in hardware have been made, and more industries have begun exploring quantum solutions. Quantum sensing and cryptography are also gaining importance.
However, the report highlights some of the challenges in commercialising the mysteries of quantum physics. It highlights that business leaders need to tread carefully when it comes to protecting their quantum innovations if they are to maximise their potential.
Commenting on the report, Urs Ferber, Partner and Patent Attorney at Mewburn Ellis said:
“Today, quantum technology is still in its infancy, but the industry is rapidly growing, with breakthroughs in scalability, error correction, and software development. Many see it as a transformative field with wide-ranging implications for computing, communication, and beyond."
“The sense of a global arms race to develop scalable and practical quantum solutions is palpable and this indicates the seriousness with which administrations are treating this area."
“However, given the complexities of quantum technology, there are challenges to patenting these innovations, and businesses will need to take expert advice on how best to protect their IP.”
