Alex has experience working across all stages of the patent life cycle from invention capture and drafting, through prosecution, to opposition proceedings at the EPO. He is particularly experienced in the fields of optics & photonics and computer-implemented inventions. He also carries out analysis of IP landscapes for freedom to operate (FTO) and IP audit projects, and has experience of helping start-up companies and SMEs build and manage their patent portfolios inventions.

Alex has a MPhys degree in Physics and a DPhil in Atomic & Laser Physics, both from the University of Oxford. His research involved working in large-scale international collaborations designing and implementing high-power laser experiments for a range of plasma physics applications and developing diagnostic equipment relevant to those experiments. This involves the use and development of novel computing approaches.
Alex joined Mewburn Ellis in 2019. After spending time at another law firm, Alex returned to Mewburn Ellis in 2022, and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2023.
