Daniel is a UK and European patent attorney working in the fields of electronics, software and engineering. He handles a range of patent work, particularly the drafting and prosecution of UK, European and PCT applications, as well as patent prosecution in a variety of jurisdictions such as the US, Japan and China. Daniel also regularly advises clients on FTO and patent-landscaping projects, and has experience of examining and opposition division oral proceedings at the EPO.

Background

He has a BSc and PhD in physics from the University of St Andrews, Scotland. Part of his PhD research was carried out at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden, Germany, and resulted in several high profile publications, notably in Science. He joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2015, qualifying as a UK Chartered Patent Attorney in 2018 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2019.

Opposition highlights

Daniel has worked on over 5 opposition, here are some cases:

EP3784064, Nonwovenn v Swedish Match - Nonwovenn were one of four opponents against the Swedish patent. The patent was maintained in amended form. There is an ongoing appeal (which Daniel is not involved with). 

EP3187917, Fuyao v two opponents - The opposition division decided to revoke the patent. The decision is being appealed on the basis of a procedural violation.
