Melodie is an associate patent attorney in our chemistry and life sciences team.  She works predominantly in the pharmaceutical field, but also handles work in agrochemicals and other chemical fields.  She has considerable experience in drafting new patent applications, particularly for new molecular entities, and she has experience prosecuting patent applications to grant before the EPO and worldwide.  She has also assisted colleagues on several EPO oppositions and appeal proceedings, and has experience in freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses, patentability opinions, and due diligence work.

Melodie works with a range of clients from universities and SMEs to large, multinational corporations and well-known pharmaceutical and biotech companies worldwide.
 
Background
 
Melodie has a first-class Master’s degree in Chemistry and a DPhil in Organic Chemistry, both from the University of Oxford.  Her undergraduate research focused on synthesising drug candidates for the treatment of ERF-related craniosynostosis.  Her doctoral research focused upon developing a novel method to synthesise the bicyclic ketal D ring in the total synthesis of the marine macrolactone pectenotoxin-4.  During her studies, she also interned at Novartis, GSK, and MSD in the medicinal and process chemistry departments.

Melodie joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2019, qualifying as a Chartered (UK) and EP Patent Attorney in 2023.
