Anja is an experienced member of the Life Sciences Patent Team, focusing on bioprocess engineering, pharmaceuticals, and related fields. She specialises in patent prosecution before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA), as well as handling oppositions and appeals at the EPO, both offensive and defensive. 

Anja’s work spans a diverse range of technologies, including bioprocess engineering, immuno-oncology, biotherapeutics, genetic engineering, and bioinformatics.

  • Bioprocess Engineering (protein (e.g., antibody) production and purification)
  • Biotherapeutics & Immuno-Oncology (immune checkpoint inhibitors, antibodies, therapeutic uses)
  • Cellular & Molecular Immunology (T-cell receptors, MHC class II molecules)
  • Genetic Engineering & Gene Therapy (miRNA inhibitors, CRISPR/Cas technology)
  • Bioinformatics (imaging technologies)

Anja works with a variety of clients, including large multinational biopharmaceutical corporations, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and emerging biotech startups in the bioprocess engineering sector.

Academic & Professional Background

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biotechnology, TU München
  • Master’s Degree in Industrial Biotechnology, TU München (focus on affinity ligands for antibody purification via chromatography)
  • PhD in Biochemical Engineering, TU München (research on microalgae growth kinetics, scaling up from laboratory to pilot scale)

Anja is passionate about bridging scientific expertise with patent law. She is a German Patent Attorney (qualified in 2020) and a European Patent Attorney (qualified in 2021), as well as UPC representative. She joined Mewburn Ellis in 2021.
