Read our law and practice guidesJohannes advises clients in relation to inventions made in the fields of mechanical engineering and physics, and has extensive experience in consumer electronics such as televisions and audio systems. He also has a particular interest in quantum technologies, originating from his academic background which involved research of quantum states on regular structures, for example as found in optical multi-slit interferometers, in solid-state physics or in quantum chemistry. More recently his main interest has been quantum algorithms.
Johannes works with early-stage clients, including start-ups and spinouts. He assists with devising and implementing an IP strategy for the purposes of capturing, assessing, deciding upon, and protecting IP; for example within the scope of a funded IP audit. Johannes also works with larger clients, such as multinationals. Here his experience includes steering global IP portfolios to maximise commercial value by targeting industry developments and specific competitor products. He also advises on competitors’ IP portfolios, e.g. by identifying key patents and assessing their significance in the context of portfolio acquisition or freedom to operate.

Background
Johannes holds an undergraduate degree in theoretical physics from the University of St Andrews and a postgraduate degree in mathematical physics from the University of York. His postgraduate research in the foundations of quantum mechanics involved finding precise mathematical descriptions for the (non-)commuting observables of quantum states in regular structures. He published multiple scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Johannes qualified as a European Patent attorney whilst working at another firm, and in 2022 qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and joined Mewburn Ellis.
