John works predominantly in the information and communications technology fields and handles all aspects of patent work, particularly the drafting and prosecution of patent applications at the EPO and UKIPO. He has experience of Oral Proceedings at the EPO at all stages (examination, opposition and appeal).

John notably had a successful UKIPO hearing relating to computer programs and business methods which are generally difficult to patent at the UKIPO (BL O/809/18).

Clients

John predominantly works for large multinational companies based in Japan, the US and the UK, but also works for SMBs and individuals.

Background

John has a Masters degree in Physics and a PhD in Experimental and Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge. His PhD research focussed on optimising x-ray based image correlation techniques for studying the internal displacements of granular materials during dynamic penetration and compaction.

John joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2010. He qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2013 before joining the partnership in 2017.

John is a regular visitor to Japan, where he visits clients and provides seminars and workshops on European patent law.
