Simon is a member of our electronics, computing & physics, and engineering patent teams. Some areas in which Simon has particular expertise include:

  • Home appliances, particularly beverage machines
  • E-cigarettes and pharmaceutical inhalers
  • Medical devices and E-health platforms
  • Consumer electronics, particularly computer peripherals, TV and audio equipment

Simon deals mainly with drafting for multiple jurisdictions, representing clients before the EPO Opposition Division and providing strategic advice including patent life cycle management, vendor lock-in models and protection of consumables.

Simon has spent a significant part of his career working in-house and in continental Europe. Previously, he worked for Nestlé Nespresso where he was responsible for, inter alia, drafting and prosecuting core patent applications to protect coffee-capsule consumables. He was seconded to Japan Tobacco for over two years where he worked on E-cigarettes/inhalers. He has also worked for a Swiss private practice and a first tier German private practice.

Simon has a master’s degree in aeronautical (mechanical) engineering and a PhD in computer science both from Imperial College, London. Simon has substantial industrial experience and spent five years working in the engineering sector, having worked for the prestigious Advanced Technology Centre of BAE systems and for the Advanced Technology Group of Ove Arup, before entering the patent profession.

Simon joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2018. He qualified both as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2012 and 2013 respectively.  Simon acts as an examiner and reviewer for the UK patent drafting paper. He is also a qualified higher courts patent litigator.
