Simon handles patent work in a wide range of engineering fields, with extensive experience in the transport sector as well as in the oil & gas, consumer products, Medtech and structural & mechanical engineering industry sectors.

He has particular experience in:

  • marine propulsion systems
  • off-shore drilling operations and tools
  • heave compensators
  • aeronautical engineering including gas turbine engines
  • automotive technology including safety systems (e.g. air bags, crash sensors, active safety systems) and vehicle transmission systems
  • medical devices such as infusion systems, intravascular stents and guidewires
  • wind & tidal turbines
  • carbon sequestration
  • office equipment

Simon deals mainly with prosecution and opposition/appeal work and also provides strategic intellectual property advice and portfolio management for domestic and overseas clients. His clients include large corporations and SMEs. He is a regular business visitor to the US.

Simon is recognised in the IAM Patent 1000, 2017 guide. He is described as “outstanding”,“extremely reliable, thorough and easy to work with”. In the 2018 edition, Simon receives praise as a “mechanics maestro with a lock on the oil and gas and structural engineering sectors.” Simon is once again recognised in the 2019 guide as dispensing “top-notch engineering counsel.”

Simon has a degree in Ship Science from Southampton University, including specialisations in fluid dynamics and materials engineering.

Simon joined Mewburn Ellis LLP as a partner in 2008. He qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 1999 and a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2000. Simon was previously a partner of a smaller IP firm, working in London.
