Sofia is a member of our trade mark and dispute resolution teams.
She has extensive experience of oppositions, revocation and invalidity actions in the UK as well as EUTM oppositions, including complex families of cases. This includes representing clients at hearings before the UK-IPO and in appeals before the Appointed Person. Sofia has also been involved in appeals to the English courts and the European General Court. Sofia was part of the team behind successful trade mark infringement proceedings in the UK. She is experienced in drafting and negotiating settlement agreements, often in tandem with contentious proceedings. Sofia regularly advises on trade mark clearance searches, and handles UK, EUTM and Madrid Protocol applications, as well as large international portfolios, working with trusted local attorney.
Sofia has experience working in a wide range of industry sectors including the agricultural sciences, biotechnology, consumer products, electronics & electronic engineering, industrial chemistry, mechanical & structural engineering, pharmaceutical and retail sectors. She has a particular interest in the food & beverage sector.
Sofia is “well regarded” in Legal 500 (2015). Whilst Legal 500 (2016) researchers comment “(Sofia) Arenal is ‘excellent, smart, creative and hardworking’ and can handle all aspects of trade mark law”. Sofia is once again recognised in the 2017 edition of the Legal 500. She is recommended for complex opposition and other contentious work as well as handling large trade mark portfolios.
Sofia has been recognised as a Trade Mark Star in the Managing Intellectual Property IP Stars directory 2018.
Sofia is recommended in The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals 2018 review. Sofia has previously spent several months on secondment to a US law firm. She has a special interest in Japan, and regularly gives lectures on aspects of UK and EU trade mark law there.
She is a member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys and AIPPI. She is a former member of the UK Council and Events Committee of AIPPI.
Sofia has a degree in law (with French) from the University of Birmingham and a diploma in French Legal Studies from the Université de Limoges, France. She worked as a translator and trade mark assistant in Spain.
Sofia joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 1996. She qualified as a UK Registered Trade Mark Attorney in 2003 and is a Representative authorised to act before EUIPO.
