Wilhelmus (Willum) is in our chemistry & materials patent team and has a particular focus on the pharmaceutical sector where he has extensive experience working on small molecule pharmaceuticals for a range of indications such as cancer, inflammation, Alzheimer’s, and viral infections. His practice includes patent drafting, prosecution, and opposition in all key jurisdictions, for clients ranging from Universities, spin-outs, and start-ups to large multinational drug companies. His work covers the whole range of a pharmaceutical’s lifetime, from early development through to clinical candidates, salts, crystal forms, formulations, treatment regimens, and combination therapies.
Willum was recommended in Chambers & Partners 2014 which said: “Wilhelmus is “very good at grasping and summarising problems in the chemistry field.” He is highly regarded for his work on pharmaceutical and polymer patents”.
His clients include UK charities and universities and their spin-outs, as well as large multi-national companies in the US and Europe.
Willum has been a CEIPI (Centre d’Études Internationales de la Propriété Intellectuelle) tutor since 2004 and continues to lecture prospective European Patent Attorneys in Strasbourg on an annual basis.
Willum has a degree in chemistry from Queens University (Canada) and a PhD in chemistry from University of Cambridge (UK). He also held a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University (USA), before starting his career in patent law.
Willum joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 1999 after working as a US patent attorney for 5 years. He qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2004 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2005. He joined the partnership in 2005.
