Space Technology – engineering the opportunities

The challenges posed by the space environment are substantial – getting there, working there, staying there. On the other hand the commercial opportunities for those who can make it work are clear. To operate successfully, a variety of challenges, many of them interdisciplinary, must be addressed. It’s no surprise therefore that space technology covers a wide range of sectors – some clearly traditionally space-focused, along with other traditional and cutting edge sectors re-engineering existing technologies for the space sector.

The future of Space Technology

The opportunities to generate revenue from space technology are growing day by day. Services that improve on what’s gone before – cheaper, lighter, faster, clearer, enduring, more secure. In combination with new space-associated services and data not previously available at all, space technology is an exciting place to work.

Space technology also presents opportunities for formerly terrestrial suppliers and innovators to branch out. The extreme and inaccessible nature of the space and launch environments often means Earth-bound technologies require modification. For example, to engineer existing products for strength, longevity and stability.

We’re as excited as anyone to see where space tech leads us all in years to come, surely well beyond what we can imagine now.

Space Technology and Intellectual Property

In general the threshold for choosing to seek IP protection should rightly be meaningful; the commercial rationale should be considered and clear. Space technology is no different in this respect, particularly where IP supports an investment case. We know that. Developing lean, valuable, and business-relevant IP portfolios for our clients is what we’re about. We’re here to understand and support your business, business plan and aspirations, not just your IP function.

We’re also in the business of innovation ourselves. We don’t do IP like others. Like space technology operators, we have an eye on the complete chain of stakeholders, actual and potential, for our work. In doing so, we develop innovative and flexible ways of working, strategies, and IP outputs that go beyond the norm. This gives a level of flexibility that enables us to deliver definite commercial value. We’ve worked hard on the ways we work and we’re proud of our people who live them.

Meet our Space Technology team

We have a strong team to deliver for space technology companies. Our breadth of engineering experience in our patents team, including in areas beyond the traditional engineering disciplines, lends itself to space technology. All of our patent teams are available to space technology clients, including for example our experts in Quantum Technology and AI.

We don’t stop at technology though. There’s much more to building an effective IP portfolio. We combine our technical expertise with leaders in IP strategy, branding and trade mark protection, design protection, IP portfolio management, competitor awareness and freedom to operate (FTO) analyses.

As a business we pride ourselves on our teamwork – we do it formally and informally every day. Our patents, legal and trade mark teams work closely with clients and with one another. This ensures our clients can make the most of their intellectual property: they have a coherent story to tell and a valuable portfolio to use.

FORWARD MAGAZINE

Mewburn Ellis Forward is a biannual publication that celebrates the best of innovation and exploration. Through its pages we hope to inform and entertain, but also to encourage discussion about the most compelling developments taking place in the scientific and entrepreneurial world. Along the way, we’ll engage with the IP challenges that international organisations face every day.
